Offered as an Academic Certification
Students will learn the elements of design, project, and character analysis as they investigate how what we wear tells its own story. Students will learn advanced research techniques and generate project-specific organizational paperwork. They will develop figure-drawing and painting skills using traditional and digital drawing techniques. Those designs will translate into costumes, makeup, and characters for traditional theatre and live performance as well as film, television, game development, and the expanding worlds of graphic novels, animation, and digital design. Advancing students will have opportunities to see designs brought to life on stage, in the studio, or in virtual worlds. Upon completion of this certificate, students will have created unique design portfolios.

The Character and Costume Design Certificate is open to all degree-seeking students at SOU but is particularly suited for Theatre, Emerging Media and Digital Arts, and Digital Cinema majors eager to learn the skills required to be an artist in the entertainment industry.
Degree Roadmap
Students will take courses in Character and Costume Design, Stage Makeup, Drawing, and Fashion History.
