Maybe it started in the sandbox, or Lego, or drawing treacherous terrains for role playing games. If you love creating worlds then the Certificate in Scenic and Environment Design could be for you. Cultural and technological changes have radically altered design for the entertainment and pre-visualization industries, blurring the lines between traditional stagecraft and emerging media as never before. You can learn traditional stagecraft and fabrication or techniques in emerging digital virtual environment design. You’ll gain experience in art and design theory, technical visualization and presentation skills and have the opportunity to work on design and fabrication projects for a variety of media. If you’re interested in physical scenery for theater or film or dream of creating whole new digital environments for VFX or game development, you can start building your skills here.
The Certificate in Scenic and Environment Design is open to all degree-seeking students at SOU but is particularly suited for Theater, Emerging Media and Digital Arts, and Digital Cinema majors interested in scenic or environmental design for the entertainment industry.
The Core Curriculum includes classes in Design and Composition, Scenic Design Computer Aided Drafting (CAD), Rendering and Digital Design, Design Communication and Collaboration, Modeling Methods, and Introduction to the Unreal Engine. Next choose from additional classes in Stagecraft, Character and Costume Design, Stage Lighting, Scene Painting, Stage properties, Photography, Animation, Video gaming, Storyboarding, Digital Cinema production, Studio production for Film and Television, and more.
