Diversity, Inclusivity, and Civility: Developing and Enhancing Students' Cultural Competency (Webinar)
This two-part workshop will address how developing and enhancing cultural competence must be the primary outcome of diversity/inclusivity programs. Cultural competence is the ability to understand, communicate and effectively interact with people across cultures. While "culture" is often viewed in the U.S. as being primarily related to race, ethnicity, and gender, effective diversity/inclusivity programs must also address sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability/ability, religion, age, and other issues which lead to marginalization and exclusion.
Below are the powerpoints used in the webinar.
Diversity Is What We Have, Inclusion Is What We Do With It
Evangeline Weiss, Leadership Progams Director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, led our campus in four conversations addressing our current climate and the value of inclusion for our vision of SOU's future. Click here for the report that she submitted.
Retention of African American College Students (Webinar)
The overall success of the institution is tied to the success of this growing population that often shows up on campus underprepared and underrepresented. This webinar will present the steps to gain the institutional commitment needed to develop a comprehensive, data-driven, strategic, and campus-wide approach in order to increase retention and graduation rates of African American students. The institutional approach involves Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Support Programs, Faculty, First Year Experience, and Student Affairs departments such as Orientation, Diversity/Multicultural, Residence Life, Student Activities/Leadership, and Service Learning. Examples of successful initiatives that can be developed on any campus will be presented. (Copyright for our institution only)
