Southern Oregon University

The Department of Art and Art History at Southern Oregon University is made up of a dynamic group of faculty and staff dedicated to maintaining a learning environment that is both supportive and challenging of its students.

The department’s goal is to give students a firm foundation in traditional practices and to continually promote, encourage, and further the discourse of contemporary art through study and methodology. Students are expected to explore state of the art trends and to develop new and original ways of thinking that generate creative activity.

Centered around the Schneider Museum of Art, the new Center for the Visual Arts (CVA) complex also includes the Art Building, the Marion Ady Building, and the De Boer Sculpture Building. The modern facility is well equipped to support multiple fine art disciplines and provides ample space for students to thoroughly explore their research interests.

With small class sizes, a dedicated faculty of artists and scholars, and a focus on student success, our program delivers a highly personalized university experience. Our graduates leave with an enriched vocabulary of historical and contemporary  art, an openness to innovation, and the training necessary to become active, successful artists and art professionals.
