The Deer Creek Center is Now Open!
The Southern Oregon University Foundation and the Siskiyou Field Institute have recently opened the Deer Creek Center for Field Research and Education in the Illinois Valley near Selma, Oregon. Situated at the gateway to the Wild and Scenic Illinois River, this 850-acre site showcases an unusual diversity of learning environments: at-risk plant communities, serpentine geology, fire-affected forest and miles of frontage on salmon-bearing streams. Improvements now under way will accommodate a large variety of groups and support the rich research opportunities onsite. The Siskiyou Field Institute has moved its offices on site, and SOU, Humboldt State University, and UC Davis are already utilizing the property for research and field programs. Pilot programs with local schools are taking advantage of the superlative educational environments. This dedicated facility will be open year-round, and SOU and the Siskiyou Field Institute are currently engaged in planning many future programs for education and research that take advantage of this unique new facility.
