MM 515 Management Information Systems
This course provides an overview of contemporary Management Information Systems (MIS). It emphasizes the broader environments of Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT) and their impact on the organization and the non-MIS manager. The course describes a diversity of technical, managerial and professional knowledge which is needed for the non-MIS manager to optimize success in the typical technology rich organization of today. Current business and technology trends and drivers, including emerging technologies, that affect the present and future of IS and organizations are presented as well.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will meet the following objectives:
- Understand capabilities that Information Systems can provide for an organization and learn sufficient vocabulary in order to contribute to organizational efforts in IT
- Understand importance of Business and IT Alignment
- Understand strategic use and value of Information Systems
- Understand factors that lead to success or failure in systems implementations
- Understand items that should be considered when evaluating IT investments
- Understand systems vulnerability and abuse and issues of security and disaster recovery
- Understand how knowledge can be utilized and managed and how it can improve the success of an organization
- Be aware of some of the emerging technologies for the future of Information Technology as well as technology trends and drivers
It is important that students read the chapters prior to each class. Reading of the assigned chapter(s) before class will facilitate student understanding of the material, class discussions, and class activities. Due to the ever-changing nature of information technology, it is equally important to read current articles and/or recent case studies in the area of information systems and technology management. To this end, for each article review, students will be required to find one or more articles that specifically relates to a topic that will be covered during the class the assignment is due. Students will submit written summaries (up to two full single-spaced pages) and discuss their findings with the class. Written summaries are to be concluded with personal reflections and/or how this information is relevant to their job, company, or industry. Original article(s) are to be attached and handed in with review. Grading criteria will be discussed in class.
Two on-line tests will be given, using Blackboard. The tests will each be available for a designated time period as outlined on the schedule and can be completed anytime during that period. The tests will be composed of short-answer questions related to chapter content and class discussions.
Organizational MIS Case Study (or Paper Option)
Students will create an IS case study report on an organization. This is a culminating project and will include information on the current Information Systems infrastructure and environment, a SWOT analysis of the organization's IS/IT capacity, a description of the overall effectiveness, a detailed description of a particular IS/IT decision, and IS strategy recommendations. If a student does not have adequate access to an organization willing to share this information, a paper option is available. Additional details on this assignment will be provided.
Students will present 10-15 minute summaries of their case studies or papers to the class during one of the last two class periods. Students will use PowerPoint to create presentation files and will submit these files into blackboard prior to class on the day they are scheduled to present.
