Southern Oregon University

SOU's Department of Communication helps students build knowledge and skills in verbal, nonverbal and visual communication, and majors can earn degrees in either Communication Studies or Film, Television & Convergent Media.

The department's newly updated curriculum gives students a rich combination of intellectual rigor and professional skills in diverse areas including journalism, digital media and film/video production. Communication students can also earn certificates in Conflict Resolution and in Management of Human Resources.

The faculty bring a broad range of academic and professional training and accomplishments to the classroom. In addition, student-centered programs emphasize skill-building, critical thinking, research and writing. Students may earn credit for on-campus practical experience with such organizations as the University's student newspapercommunity access television station, and public radio facilities.

Communication majors intern throughout and beyond the immediate region at newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, social service organizations, government agencies, advertising and public relations firms, and other business and organizations.

  • Small class size ensures high-level interaction with our outstanding teaching faculty.
  • Internships offer hands-on experience in diverse local businesses and nonprofit organizations.
  • On-campus activities develop personal and professional skills.

The Department of Communication is also a partner with SOU's interdisciplinary Center for Emerging Media & Digital Arts and the Southern Oregon Digital Media Center.
