Southern Oregon University offers an attractive and comprehensive benefits package to all of its regularly employed faculty and staff including health, retirement, and time off programs that allow for a balanced life.  These benefits are offered through the State of Oregon Public Employees Benefit Board (PEBB).  Eligibility for benefits may vary depending on your employment category or classification. Employees who have a change in appointment may experience changes in their benefit coverage. Benefit information - New Hires

Welcome to Southern Oregon University!  As you meet with the Service Center staff to complete your new hire paperwork, you will be scheduled for a Benefits class.  Classes are held twice weekly, and it is important that you set aside time to attend a class. There is a lot of information to review, and this is a great time to ask questions. 

It is important to note that you only have thirty (30) days from your date of hire to complete your health care choices.  Missing this deadline will prevent you from participating in the benefits plans until the next calendar year.

Benefits are broken up into 2 separate categories:  ‘core’ and ‘optional’.  If you have a .5 or greater appointment, then you and your eligible dependents (coverage of domestic partners and their children may have tax implications) are eligible to participate.  

Coverage is effective the first day of the calendar month following your date of hire or your completion of enrollment.

After initial enrollment, changes may be made only during the annual Open Enrollment period or within 30 days of a qualified family status change (i.e., birth, death, marriage, divorce, employment status change). Open Enrollment occurs in the late fall, and changes made during Open Enrollment are effective January 1 of the following year.

In addition to the 'core' and 'optional' benefits, additional programs are available to SOU employees.  These programs include participation in a Tuition Subsidy, a Employee Assistance program, and a variety of wellness activities, some of which have financial incentives.

Retirement plans are offered to all eligible employees.  There are 2 plans available, both with different eligibility criteria.

Voluntary Saving Programs

Two tax-deferred programs are available to employees: the OUS Tax-Deferred Investment 403(b) plan and the Oregon Savings growth 457 Plan. Contributions to these plans are made before federal and state taxes are imposed. Payroll deduction to purchase U.S. Savings Bonds is also available.

You may change your contributions to the TDI plan at any point.  Simply complete and return this form to the Benefits Office.  Forms received by the 10th of any month will be effective with that month's payroll.

 Retirement Plans

After six full months of employment, eligible unclassified employees may choose between two retirement plans: the Oregon Public Service Retirement Plan (PERS/OPSRP) and the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP). After six full months of employment eligible classified employees become OPSRP members.  In both the PERS and ORP plans, the University contributes a specified percentage.

    • This is a no cost program available to all Southern Oregon University employees and their families.
  • Sporting Events: Faculty and Staff receive free admission (except for SOU hosted National Playoffs). Please contact 552-6772 for a season pass.
  • Theatre Events: Faculty and Staff pay $10.00 for self and one guest.
