In a reciprocal exchange, the student remains enrolled at Southern Oregon University while studying at a partner institution abroad. He or she pays tuition and fees at SOU as well, just as if he or she were here, but all housing, meals, and other costs will be paid in the host country. Most scholarships and financial aid will apply as usual. Generally, these programs are the most cost-effective way to study abroad. All students must be recommended by the Education Abroad Coordinator and the individual foreign university applications forwarded to the host institution by the SOU Office of International Programs.
Where Can I Go?
SOU currently has reciprocal exchange agreements with universities in England, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and the Republic of Korea (South Korea). England
University of Winchester. Fall Semester Only. Direct enrollment in university courses. All majors. This is one of SOU’s longest-running reciprocal exchange programs and is very competitive. In the last couple of years SOU has been able to send 5-6 students each Fall. Selection based on academic achievement, faculty recommendations, and class standing.
Okayama University. First Semester, April-September/Second Semester, October-March. Training in Japanese Language and Culture. Japanese government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) scholarships available. All majors.
Shinshu University. First Semester, April-September/Second Semester, October-March. Intensive Japanese Language Program. Japanese government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) scholarships available. All majors.
Tokyo International University. First September, April-Semester/Second Semester, October-March. Japan Studies Program, focusing on language and culture. Elective courses taught in English are available during both semesters. Japanese government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) scholarships available. All majors.
Hochschule für Technik und Wirschaft des Saarlands, University of Applied Sciences. Summer Semester, March-July/Winter Semester, September-January. Business majors only. Dual degree and traditional exchange year options. Most courses taught in English. German language course recommended.
Hochschule Harz, University of Applied Sciences. International Summer School, March-July/Winter Semester, September-January. Business majors only. Dual degree and traditional exchange year options. Most courses taught in English. German language course recommended. The International Summer School is a three-week summer term. Two SOU students will receive scholarships for the program fee of approximately $950.
Escuela Bancaria y Comercio. Mexico's Business School. Fall, Spring, and Summer Semesters. Direct enrollment in the Escuela. Many courses taught in English. Primarly for business majors and minors. Internships available for all majors.
University of Guanajuato. Fall and Spring Semesters. Direct enrollment in the university. Must have documented knowledge of the Spanish language to enroll in regular courses in the university. The exchange does not apply to the UG Centro de Idiomas, which is an intensive language program for foreigners needing to attain Spanish language skills to enroll in the university. All majors.Republic of Korea (South Korea)Chonnam National University. SOU and Chonnam University participate in the TaLK Exchange Student Program, funded by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology. SOU students will receive a scholarship to study at Chonnam in exchange for teaching after-school English classes at a rural elementary school for nine hours a week. TaLK is a unique opportunity for SOU students who may be looking for a chance to apply theory in a real teaching environment, receive first-hand cultural education, as well as the support to develop a greater global perspective. The scholarhip term is either six months or one year and requires a four-week training program. Benefits include a monthly stipend of approximately $800.00, dormitory housing, health insurance, a settlement subsidy, vacation leave, and cultural experience programs. In the Spring Semester (March-June) and during the Fall Semester (September-December), SOU exchange students enroll in regular courses, many of them taught in English.
Dankook University. There are two possibilities for study at Dankook University: during the regular school year and in the summer. In the Spring Semester (March-June) and during the Fall Semester (September-December), SOU exchange students enroll in regular courses, some of which are taught in English. All majors. Summer only:Academic Program of the International Summer School. The academic program consists of four weeks sof intensive classes (8 SOU credits) taught by international and/or Korean professors in English. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of cultural activities and field trips during their stay. All majors. English Village Program. Prior to attending the Academic Program of the International Summer School, students have the opportunity to teach English for three weeks to small groups of Dankook University students. Free housing is offered for participants in the English Village Program, as well as up to $1,200 airfare reimbursement.
Yeungnam University. Business courses taught in English. In the Spring Semester (March-June) and during the Fall Semester (September-December), SOU exchange students enroll in regular courses, many of them taught in English.
The process of reciprocal exchange is probably one of the most involved. However, with a little bit of patience and a lot of planning, it can be done in an expeditious manner and the monetary savings makes the extra effort worth the time. The deadline for applying to all programs is February 15.
For more information regarding the application procedure, please visit the individual program page. Students must submit their applications in person to our office in Stevenson Union. You must meet with an office staff person in order to turn in your application. Thus, during busy times of the year, it is wise to schedule an appointment with a Peer Advisor when you are ready to turn in your application.
Programs falling under the title Affiliated/Approved include many different models, including direct enrollment at a university abroad and education abroad facilitated by an organization or another US university. Affiliated/Approved programs include academic year, semester, and summer programs. In any type of Affiliated/Approved program, students are enrolled at SOU and therefore the course credit is recorded on your SOU transcript. Institution-specific scholarships would not apply. If you have institutional scholarships, make sure complete and submit a deferral form (Scholarships and Financial Aid Office) before your leave. It is possible to use federal financial aid on most Affiliated/Approved programs.

Central America and the Caribbean
The timelines for affiliated/approved programs will vary from program to program, from type to type. The first step after selecting a program is to realistically assess your financial situation and apply immediately for a passport.
There are TWO required application forms for each program, one for the SOU International Programs office and the other for the program sponsors. A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education (2/24/2011) pointed out why international internships are increasingly important to university global engagement. In the essay, Cindy Chalou and Charles Gliozzo of Michigan State University wrote that, “College graduates need an international perspective to be competitive in today's job market. Many will have to negotiate foreign cultures whether they work in the United States or abroad. As part of this continuing change, international college internships should now be viewed as steppingstones to career success.”
SOU students are fortunate to have two excellent choices from which to select a meaningful international internship. Through careful planning and working with an SOU professor, students are able to earn credit abroad for their intern experience. It is essential that you begin planning several months in advance of when you intend to begin your internship!

IE3 Global Internships is connected to Oregon Abroad and provides internship placement, pre-departure orientation, learning tools, and monitoring and support by a regional director in the U.S. Through IE3 you will be able to earn academic credit at SOU while gaining professional experience. Internships are available in a varietyof private-sector companies, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions around the world.
The National Student Exchange is a unique, not-for-profit consortium of nearly 200 accredited, baccalaureate-granting colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Through NSE, these member institutions provide exchange opportunities for the multitude of undergraduate students for whom an overseas experience is not appropriate, comfortable or affordable. Established in 1968, NSE has provided exchange opportunities to more than 105,000 students.
NSE offers study opportunities at diverse university settings and provides access to a wide array of courses and programs; field experiences, co-op, and internship options; and resident assistant, honors, and study abroad opportunities of its member campuses.
The program features a tuition reciprocity system that allows students to attend their host institution by paying either the in-state tuition/fees of their host institution or the normal tuition/fees of their home campus. Work completed while on exchange at the host campus is brought back to the home institution and credited to the student's degree program. Each campus has a coordinator who interacts on behalf of incoming and outgoing students with other member campuses and with various departments on their own campus.
NSE is funded through institutional membership fees and student application fees. NSE is administered by a Central Office staff and governed by a Council elected from within the membership.
