GroupWise Remote
How GroupWise Remote works
- When using GroupWise in Remote mode you do not have to be connected to the network, or dialed in to the network, while you work in GroupWise. You read your messages and compose new messages "offline"
- You only need to dialin to retrieve new messages and send messages you have composed.
- GroupWise accomplishes this by creating a Remote Mailbox on your local computer (usually a laptop). You initially create this Remote Mailbox while you are connected to the Campus Network, using the Hit the Road feature.
- Your Remote Mailbox contains a copy of all of the messages, appointments, etc. in all your folders from your Master Mailbox. It can also contain a copy of the Address Book.
- Then when you are on the road, you only need to dialin to synchronize your Remote Mailbox with your Master Mailbox.
Prerequisites
- you will need a Pentium class Laptop running Windows 95/98/NT, or a Mac Powerbook.
- GroupWise 5.5 must be installed on the local hard disk of the computer. Computing Services can do this.
- You must have a 28.8kbps or better modem.
- You must have Windows Dialup Networking installed and configured. Computing Services can do this.
Creating your Remote Mailbox
- While connected to the Campus Network, start GroupWise as you normally do.
- Select Hit the Road from the Tools Menu
- Create your Remote Mailbox on "This Machine"
- You will be prompted to set a password on your remote Mailbox. You may use the same password you normally use to access GroupWise or select a different password.
- Create your Remote Mailbox on "This Machine"
- Provide the path to the GroupWise Remote directory.
- The default location is C:\Novell\GroupWise\Remote
- Just click Next at this screen.
- You don't provide a dialup number here because you will be using Windows Dialup Networking.
- Select the items you wish to have downloaded to your Remote Mailbox.
- You should select everything except Documents.
- By default "Hit the road" only copies items 5 days old or newer to your remote mailbox. If you wish to include items older then this click the Advanced button.
- Set the number of days back for which you want to include items.
- You will see this screen as GroupWise copies items from your main Mailbox to your Remote Mailbox.
- Once all of the requests are received from the server, this screen shows as they are processed by GroupWise.
- When this is finished GroupWise has now created your Remote Mailbox. At this point you are ready to disconnect from the network and "Hit the Road".
Using your Remote Mailbox
At this point you no longer need to be connected to the network.
- When you start GroupWise while disconnected from the network you will see this screen. Click Yes to use your Remote Mailbox.
- Important: Do not establish a Dialup Session before starting GroupWise. If you do GroupWise will come up in normal Client/Server mode and not Remote mode.
- When GroupWise starts you will be working in Remote mode. You can read your messages, compose new messages, work with your Calendar, etc. as you normally do.
- When your ready to connect to the GroupWise system to synchronize your Remote and Master Mailboxes, first start a Dialup Networking session.
- You should have an icon called "SOU Dialin System" on your desktop already configured to connect to SOU.
- You may also use a dialup connection to any Internet Service Provider.
- After your dialup session is established select Send/Retrieve from the Remote Menu to synchronize your Remote and Master Mailboxes.
- GroupWise will display this screen while it is synchronizing your Remote and Master Mailboxes.
- Once all of the requests are received from the server, this screen shows as they are processed by GroupWise.
- When it is finished you can hang up the modem and continue working in GroupWise.
