GENERAL INFORMATION

Video projectors are very useful when giving a presentation to large groups. By connecting a notebook computer external video port to the video projector you can project the notebook computer display onto a wall or projection screen.

Some video projectors can be connected to the notebook computer mouse and audio ports. Connecting the mouse port allows a video projector remote control to function as a mouse, allowing you to control your presentation without having to stay next to the notebook computer. Connecting the audio port allows you to use the video projector audio controls to increase, decrease or mute the notebook computer audio.

You should give yourself plenty of time to set up a video projector. 15-30 minutes should suffice. A "practice run" of your presentation will identify any problems and make you more comfortable setting up and giving the presentation. You should place the video projector parallel to and lined up with the centerline of the projection surface. During setup of the video projector and notebook computer try to keep all the cables organized and pay special attention to avoid trip hazards. A roll of duct tape will provide a quick and simple way to secure cables to the floor and minimize trip hazards. Make sure to give the video projector plenty of clearance for proper ventilation. Pay attention to the direction of the exhaust port and make sure it does not blow on flammable materials.

After you have all the cables hooked up, remove the projector's lens cap then power on the projector and notebook computer. You may notice on some notebook computers, if you plug in a video projector the notebook computer will automatically switch to the external video/video projector display when the notebook computer is turned on. Remember you can use the notebook computer keyboard function to switch the screen back to the LCD display at any time. Give the projector a few minutes to warm up then adjust the focus and any other display adjustments as necessary. If you will be using the video projector mouse or audio features confirm they are functioning properly.

During a presentation you may encounter the notebook computer power management function that blanks the screen. This will most likely happen when you get into a lengthy conversation and leave the notebook computer idle for several minutes. If this happens, don't panic. Calmly approach the notebook computer and press one of the SHIFT keys. This will restore the notebook computer display without causing any undesirable keyboard activity (i.e. advancing to the next slide of a PowerPoint presentation or entering data unintentionally). Do not let the notebook computer sit in the power saving mode for too long as some notebook computers will power down after being in the power saving mode for several minutes.

When you are through with your presentation you should power down the video projector and be prepared to give it plenty of time to cool down. Failure to allow sufficient time for the video projector to cool down will result in reduced life of the very expensive light bulb. You can help extend the life of the bulb by leaving the unit on for at least five minutes before turning it off and by leaving the unit off for at least five minutes before turning it back on.

Video projectors are somewhat fragile and need to be transported properly. Unless you have a hard case specifically designed for air cargo, you should always hand carry-on your video projector. This may require additional planning on your part as some airlines have become more restrictive with carry-on limits.
