Remote & Mobile Access to Campus Network:
Remote Access to E-Mail

IMAP E-Mail Clients

Most E-Mail clients which support IMAP4, such as Netscape Communicator (version 4 and higher), Outlook Express (version 4 and higher), Eudora, etc. can be used to send and receive e-mail on the SOU GroupWise system.

General E-Mail Client Settings

Instructions for setting up your e-mail software can usually be found in the software's Help function, web site, or through other support channels. The settings you will need for any e-mail client are these:

IMAP Parameter SOU Setting : Faculty\Staff
Your E-mail Address: username@sou.edu
IMAP Server: gw.sou.edu
SMTP Server: gw.sou.edu

Address Book Directory Settings

LDAP Parameter SOU Setting
LDAP Server: ds.sou.edu
LDAP Search Root: SOSC

Using Multiple Accounts with the Same Software

If you have an e-mail account with an ISP (such as AOL, JeffNet, etc.), but also want to send and receive e-mail from your SOU account, you will need to use an e-mail client that allows multiple accounts, such as Netscape Communicator 4 or Outlook Express 4.

In Netscape Communicator 4.7.4, you can add more than one IMAP server, or you can use just one POP account, but cannot use both an IMAP account and a POP account at the same time.

To see how to do this in your e-mail software (assuming your software has this capability), check the software’s Help topics and look for terms such as “multiple users, accounts, or profiles.” (For Netscape Communicator, see the sections in the online help on “Mail Servers” or “User Profiles” and the “User Profile Manager.”)

For more information about Netscape Messenger, see Chapter 3 “Using Messenger” in Netscape’s Introduction to Communicator at: http://help.netscape.com/cgi-bin/handbook.cgi.

For more information about Microsoft Outlook Express, see http://support.microsoft.com/support/default.asp?pr=oex.

For other products, refer to the manufacturer web site or other support options for that product.
