SOU Policy for Wireless Network Equipment

SOU has a strategic plan for creation of wireless networking infrastructure. The major issues include security, reliability, and suitability. The security and integrity of the SOU network must be maintained, requiring an adequate means of ensuring that only authorized users are able to use the network. Reliability is a concern due to possible radio interference from other wireless (or cordless) devices.

SOU does not consider wireless networking to be a replacement for a well-wired campus. Wired access speeds are significantly faster than wireless technologies. As applications that require higher bandwidth become commonplace, wireless network technology may not be able to provide a suitable conduit. Thus wireless should be seen as an augmentation to the physical wire plant, extending the network for general-purpose network access into zones of transient use such as common areas.

A dedicated firewall is used on the SOU wireless network to enhance security and reliability.

Policies:

1. Attachment of unauthorized equipment to the SOU campus network. No Department or individual may install or connect unauthorized wireless access points on the SOU campus network. Doing so can compromise security, create opportunities for theft of services, and degrade network reliability. All network wireless installations must be performed by the SOU Information Technology(IT). This includes the Residence Halls. IT staff will install wireless traffic on special subnets so that additional security measures can be taken to ensure that only authorized university faculty, staff, and students are using the SOU network. IT staff have been working with newer wireless technologies and have the expertise to assist users in setup. IT will assist departments in utilizing these services according to University policy and wiring capabilities in place for their buildings.

2. Equipment Standards: To assure reliability and compatablity with the campus network, departments wanting wireless connectivity must purchase equipment recommended by IT.
