Web Resources
World Wide Web
Southern Oregon University is committed to establishing an effective presence
on the World Wide Web. This presence should be an inviting information
resource for current and prospective students, faculty, staff, alumni
and friends of SOU and the community, wherever they may be. To that end,
the SOU Home Page and related pages should representin a positive
lightthe people, programs, and mission of the University, for instructional
as well as promotional purposes.
The design and content of the upper level web pages is determined by the SOU Web Team. Our goal is to give these pages a consistent look and feel. Upper level pages can generally be defined as files not in a subdirectory; that is, their URL includes just www.sou.edu and the file name, as in www.sou.edu/weather.shtml. These include the top level, the university home page, and second level pages: department overview pages, search and navigational pages, and others at the root of the server. In addition, the Web Team or Webmaster will maintain Perl scripts, databases, and other files and directories.
Academic and Administrative Departments have their own directory for a web site. Their URL will contain the name of the directory followed by the file name, as in www.sou.edu/history/faculty.htm. This is considered the third level. Web pages created within department directories should adhere to the Policy for SOU Departmental Web Pages at www.sou.edu/web/policies/dept.shtml.
Personal Web Pages
To create your own personal web page, just create a directory
(folder) at the root of your F: drive called public_html and
put an index.html file and other web pages and graphics in it. Then anyone
can access it at http://www.sou.edu/~username/ (for example, http://www.sou.edu/~smithj/).
Web
Editing Software
In support of your Web development efforts, the SOU Web Team has selected
Macromedia Dreamweaver as the authoring program of choice on campus. Dreamweaver
is fairly easy to use, rich in features, and compatible with our existing
Web site and campus network. A graphics program, Macromedia Fireworks,
is also available for those of you who will be designing your own Web
graphics. Both programs are available for Windows or Macintosh, and are
free to campus users who have previous Web skills or receive training.
For more information on creating web pages at SOU, including policies, guidelines, and instructions, please see www.sou.edu/web/. For support and training options, or to receive Dreamweaver and/or Fireworks software, contact the Help Desk at 2-6900.
Campus
Calendar
A centralized calendar has been set up on the web to browse and search
for campus events. We encourage you to post all events happening on campus
or SOU-related events off-campus to the online Events Calendar. Just go
to the calendar at http://studentinfo.sou.edu/soucalendar/,
then click on the button in the lower left to post an event. At the login
screen, just click on the Login as Guest button, then fill out the form.
The event will then be reviewed by an editor before appearing on the calendar
itself, usually within 24 hours.
Each weekday an e-mail digest of the days events and newly posted events is sent to all subscribers to the calendar digest listserv. At the beginning of each academic term, all faculty, staff, and students are automatically subscribed to this list. This will help publicize events on campus, without having to use All Campus or All Students e-mails for each event. You can easily opt out of the calendar digest e-mails for the term by following the instructions in the e-mail or by using the convenient online form at www.sou.edu/it/subscribe.shtml.
The academic calendar is available at www.sou.edu/admissions/calendar.shtml.
eClassifieds
To advertise or look for items for sale, for rent, or wanted, or to offer
extra equipment or supplies to other departments, use the eClassifieds.
This free service for faculty, staff, students, and alumni includes posting
areas such as Announcements, Rentals & Roommates, Automobiles, Ridesharing,
General Merchandise, and Department-to-Department. Features include Keyword
Notify, which allows you to set up your own keyword search agents to notify
you when a particular kind of ad is posted, and Privacy Mail, which keeps
your own e-mail address hidden. New ads appear as soon as they are posted.
Visit the eClassifieds at: www.sou.edu/classifieds/.
Survey Tool
SOU students,
faculty and staff can use Survey to create and run simple surveys, web
site feedback and registration forms. Survey is fully web-based and allows
you to design the look and feel of a survey and collect, view and export
the responses. No knowledge of HTML is required. Complete information for getting started with the survey tool is at www.sou.edu/web/howto/survey.html
Acceptable Use
Policy
All faculty, staff, and students are expected to be familiar with and
abide by the SOU Computing Acceptable Use Policy. You can read it online
at www.sou.edu/it/policies/accept.shtml.
