Southern Oregon University

Please apply by March 15th, 2015 if you are interested in applying to the program for Fall 2015. 

Southern Oregon University offers a graduate program leading to the Master in Interdisciplinary Studies. Prospective students identify a major program of study and then select minor areas from other departments or programs. Students develop a program of study that demonstrates focus and direction appropriate to advanced academic work. Students complete a thesis or non thesis option and an oral defense. 

Applicants for Fall 2015 are encouraged to apply by March 15, 2015 for early consideration. Application files received or completed after March 15th will be processed on a space and time available basis. All students must apply both to Southern Oregon University for Graduate Admissions and  the Master in Interdisciplinary Studies degree program. Requirements are noted below.

Complete and return the Application for Graduate Admission to the University Admissions Office, including official transcripts. See Graduate Admissions for more information. This may be completed online with payment but a HARD COPY of all transcripts must be sent to: Admissions SOU, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd, Ashland, OR 97520. University admission requires a minimum 3.0 GPA in the last 90 quarter units or 60 semester hours.

Students whose first language is not English are required to take the TOEFL exam or other appropriate test of proficiency. SOU requires a minimum internet score of 76 or a CBT (computer based testing) score of 207.

These materials may also be submitted electronically as attachments to:

  • Application
  • Goals Essay--strongly encouraged to include SOU courses that implicate your areas of interest
  • Writing Sample--an essay or research paper with outside references is strongly encouraged
  • 2 Letters of recommendation

Application materials will be evaluated according to the professional judgment of faculty concerning the applicant's suitability for the Master in Interdisciplinary Studies program and the availability of faculty and programs to meet the student’s goals.

Letters of Recommendation:

Submit two letters of recommendation using the Letter of Recommendation Form included in this packet. We advise that you request your letters at least two (2) months before the application deadline. It is the applicant's responsibility to insure that all letters reach the Garth Pittman at the address below.

Missing File Items:

Applicants who submit their application before March 15th will be notified if any information is missing from their files. It is the applicant's responsibility to check on the completeness of her/his file, to contact sources, and to keep the Program Coordinator informed of any changes of address, phone number or email.
