The Cascade Clarinet Consort and Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra present “Leverage” on Monday, November 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the SOU Music Recital Hall. The concert includes performance of “Leverage,” a new composition by SOU faculty Dr. Jeffrey Richmond.
SOU faculty Dr. Rhett Bender founded and directs both the Cascade Clarinet Consort and the Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra. This fall, Dr. Richmond teamed up with Cascade Clarinet Consort to compose “Leverage” tailored to the strengths of the ensemble. The November 12 program also includes arrangements by Salem, Ore., composer Mike Curtiss.
The Cascade Clarinet Consort uses the entire family of clarinets, from contra-bass to the Eb Sopranino. SOU Performing Arts students and faculty work together to compose, arrange and perform music unique to the clarinet. Arrangements and compositions are designed to showcase individual talents as well as the beautiful blend of the clarinet family.
Dr. Richmond is recognized as a significant voice in modern jazz composition and performance education. He received his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in composition with a cognate in jazz studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
This past July, four members of Siskiyou Saxophone Orchestra traveled to the XVI World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews, Scotland, and opened for jazz recording artist Branford Marsalis. While in Scotland, Dr. Bender learned several Scottish reels and folk songs, which will be featured in the November 12 concert.
