SOU Receives $50,000 Grant for Online Course Development

August 04, 2009

Southern Oregon University (SOU) has received a $50,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to support the development of online courses. The funds will be used to help create 20 new online courses in general education areas, as well as prerequisite courses for business administration and criminology and criminal justice degree programs.

"We will remain true to SOU’s commitment to connected learning," says SOU Provost James Klein. "That means at least half of the new online courses will include community-based learning projects that get students involved with organizations in their local communities. Careful course design will provide online students with opportunities to learn and serve while obtaining academic credit in a flexible degree program."

"The grant helps SOU respond to the region’s immediate needs," says SOU's Director of Distance Education Jennifer McVay-Dyche. "A portion of the grant also supports outreach opportunities on behalf of Sloan Consortium for the purpose of promoting the quality, scale and breadth of online programs in Oregon and northern California."
