SOU to Mark Constitution Day
September 17, 2009
On Thursday, September 24, Southern Oregon University (SOU) will host activities on the Ashland campus to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.
Video programs about the U.S. Constitution will play continually from 9:30 am to noon in the lobby of the McNeal Pavilion. Programs will also play in Elmo’s in the Stevenson Union from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm.
The first program, "Our Constitution: A Conversation" features Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and retired Justice Sandra Day O’Conner discussing why we need a constitution. The second program, "A Conversation on the Constitution: Judicial Independence" also features Justice O’Conner, as well as Justices Anthony Kennedy and Stephen Breyer. Also showing is "Key Institutional Concepts," which is a three-part series on the principles of the constitution.
Hannon Library will feature copies of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, which will be housed in the Government Publications Section. SOU joins other institutions across the nation that will be celebrating this piece of history. The federal government requests that all institutions receiving federal funding sponsor a commemorative event on the week before or after September 17. These events are all free to the public.
