Schneider Museum opens two new shows featuring SOU Collections

October 02, 2009

The Schneider Museum of Art unveiled two new shows on Thursday, October 1: “Harmonie Universelle: Four Continents of Musical Instruments from SOU’s Schuman Collection” and “Recent Additions to the Permanent Collection of the Schneider Museum of Art.”

Dr. Jack Schuman, a retired librarian, art historian, teacher, writer, photographer and world traveler now living in Phoenix, Ore. has collected a significant assortment of musical instruments from all over the world—Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Schuman donated all his holdings to SOU, making this not only a significant gift and addition of assets, but instantly adding an important teaching and research resource for faculty and students. The collection contains rare and valuable instruments that are known internationally by museums, collectors and scholars.

At the Schneider, 200 unique instruments (about a quarter of the entire collection) are on display. In addition, the instruments will come alive in concerts on November 5 and December 3. For more details, visit the SMA website.

Complementing the Schuman Collection will be an exhibit of new visual art works that have been added to the Permanent Collection of the Schneider Museum, including works by the following:

Andy Warhol (American pop artist)

Maurice Vlaminck (French Fauve and colleague of H. Matisse)

Marcel Janco (founder of Zurich Dada)

Frank Okada (longtime U of O painting professor)

Roberto Matta (Chilean, French, American surrealist)

Kathe Kollwitz (famed German expressionist)

Lynn Chadwick (English sculptress)

Victor Vasarely (of op-art fame)

Michiko Itatani (Japanese American artist who teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago)

Joshua Jalbert (recent SOU photography instructor)

Schneider events (and regular admission on other days) are always free to museum members, as well as all students, faculty and staff of any school in the Rogue Valley (just show your ID).

Both shows run until December 12. Viewing hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. The Museum is located near Indiana St. and Siskiyou Blvd. on the SOU campus. Parking is available behind the museum or in nearby parking lots (follow signs).
