World Music Takes Center Stage at The Schneider Museum of Art

October 13, 2009

A colorful pallet of world music will fill the halls of the Schneider Museum of Art (SMA) at Southern Oregon University (SOU) on November 5 at 7 pm. The concert featuring area musicians supports its current exhibition, "Harmonie Universelle: Four Continents of Musical Instruments" from SOU’s Schuman Collection.

The evening’s eclectic mix of world music underscores the breadth and cultural reach of the Schuman Collection—which includes string, wind and percussion instruments dating from the 16th through 20th centuries. Area musicians Nils Olof Soderback, Kevin Carr and Mark Nelson; as well as local groups Feira Charanga (Galician folk music), Nastrave! (Balkans) and Sandya (Nothern India raga) will perform.

The music and the exhibition, "cuts across time and cultures, as well as the ubiquitous nature of aesthetic experience," said Michael Crane, Schneider Museum of Art Director.

"The concert underscores the diversity of this current show. It’s fortunate that in the Rogue Valley we have musicians whose interests are as all over the map as the Schuman exhibition," Crane said.

Jack Schuman, a librarian, art historian, photographer, teacher, world traveler and collector, has donated nearly 700 musical instruments to the University.

In addition to "Harmonie Universelle," which runs through December 12, recently acquired works by such notable artists as Andy Warhol, Kathe Kollwitz, Marcel Janco, Maurice Vlaminck, Roberto Matta, Victor Vasarely, Lynn Chadwick, Robert Cumming and Lita Albuquerque will be on display.

Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. The SMA is located in the Center for the Visual Arts, on the SOU campus, at the intersection of Indiana St. and Siskiyou Blvd. Parking is available in the lots behind and near the museum, as well as in the pay lot off Indiana St. (follow signs). A $5 donation is suggested for the concert, while museum members, students, faculty and staff at SOU are free.  For more information call 541-552-6245.
