Concurrent Employment - Although it is an acceptable practice for a student to hold more than one part-time job on campus, the student employee should make certain that he/ she informs all of his/her supervisors of such employment.
Financial Aid and Standard Wage Employment - If a student is receiving federal financial aid and accepts a standard wage job on campus, that student is required to file a Revised Budget with the Financial Aid Office, making it aware of this new employment and the amount to be earned during the current summer period and academic year.
Financial Aid Office- Located in Britt Hall in the Enrollment Services Center, the Financial Aid Office administers student Financial aid programs in compliance with applicable law, regulations and policies that govern federal, state, institutional, and private funds in order to serve the maximum number of Southern students by assisting them in completing their education using a combination of these aid sources. The Financial Aid Office certifies work-study funds for eligible student employees.
Form W-2 - A United States federal tax form issued by employers and stating how much an employee was paid in a year.
Joint Enrollment Program – SOU and Rogue Community College (RCC) – To be considered for the Joint Enrollment Program, a student must register with the Director of the SOU Medford Campus. A student may work as a student employee under one of the following circumstances:
1. A student who carries an equal amount of credit hours at SOU and RCC must choose a “home” institution and may work there as a student employee. Providing eligibility requirements are met.
2. A student who carries an unequal amount of credit hours is considered a student at the institution where the student has the greater number of credits, and may work as a student employee at that institution, providing eligibility requirements are met.
Non Work-Study Position (Standard) – A position that does not require the student applicant to qualify for the Federal College Work-Study Program.
Payday – The last business day of the month.
Pay Period – Student Employee pay period begins on the 13th of the first month and ends on the 12th of the second month. Payday for this pay period will be the last business day of the second month.
Payroll Office – Located in Churchill 160, the Payroll Office is responsible for issuing student referrals for work-study and non-work-study student jobs, processing student payroll, and issuing pay.
Student Employee – A student employee is a part-time employee who is enrolled at Southern Oregon University for the primary purpose of achieving a degree. As such, the employment is temporary and part-time and is incidental to the pursuit of an academic program.A student is eligible for student employment if they have regular student status, which means being enrolled at SOU for a minimum of 6 credit hours, has SOU/RCC Joint Enrollment, or has been approved by the Payroll Office to take a term off. To be eligible for student employment during summer break, a student must have regular student status for either the preceding or following term.
Temporary Employment – A student who is not eligible for student employment may be eligible for temporary employment. Information about temporary employment is available in Human Resources Services, located in Churchill 110.
Work Hours – Student employees may work only when they are not scheduled to be in class, and should work a maximum of 20 hours per week during an academic term so they may focus on their studies. International students are limited to work 20 hours per week due while school is in session to their F-1 student status. All student employees may work over 20 hours in a workweek during break periods.
Work-Study Certification Amount – The amount of earnings which a student has been certified as eligible to receive during a school term or a school year while working under the Federal College Work-Study Program. Many positions on campus are designated only for students certified for work-study employment.
Work-Study Position – A position that requires the student applicant to have been certified by the Financial Aid Office as eligible to work under the Federal College Work-Study Program and who has a financial allocation assigned to them for a specific period.
Workweek – The week beginning on Sunday and ending on Saturday.
