Nutrition and Aging
Provides an introduction to basic concepts in nutrition and addresses age-related changes in nutrition, metabolism, and nutritional requirements. Examines nutritional considerations for elderly populations with CVD, diabetes, osteoporosis, some cancers, depression, isolation, and disability.

Fitness and Aging
Explores relationships between fitness and aging. Emphasizes the role of lifelong physical activity or exercise in preventing or delaying chronic disease (heart disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, and Alzheimer’s). Considers functional changes in anatomical and physiological function with age and implications for program design. Promotes physical activity adherence and acquisition of healthy lifestyles.

Memory and Aging
Across the lifespan our capacity to create and hold new memories undergoes dramatic change. This observation fits with our everyday experiences and in our interactions with both the young and old. In this course we will examine why these changes in memory ability take place. We will explore the behavioral and brain basis for the phenomenal development of memory abilities occurring in infancy through adolescence, as well as the changes that people experience as they journey through old age.

The Aging Self
The Aging Self will explore some of the psychological issues surrounding aging: The impact, demands, and adjustments of aging. A focus of the class will be for you to begin developing an appreciation of your unique journey through adulthood as a part of the life process and to discover your own life’s wisdom through a personal history.
