itemprop=\"text\" ><p>Welcome back students, faculty, and blog readers! The English program at SOU is so excited for the 2024-25 school year, which is already off to an excellent start. Several new and transfer students were introduced to our program at the \u201cMeet the Majors\u201d event at the start of the term. The English department is thrilled to have so many new faces and is eager for the enthusiasm this group brings.<\/p>\n<p>As you may have already noticed, the English program made a short move from Britt Hall to the first floor of Central Hall. We are located on the east side of the first floor alongside the Spanish and American Sign Language, and Philosophy programs, which have been combined into the Language, Literature, and Philosophy (LLP) department (The Spanish\/ASL program <a href=\"\/academics\/spanish\/spanish-american-sign-language-stories\/\">launched their own blog<\/a> last spring with student blogger Enzo Trejo De Dios). Central Hall is still being set up, but everyone is working hard to make sure that the whole area, including The Decker Writing Studio, is ready for students soon.<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer Owen Larkspur, the new administrative assistant supporting the LLP department, worked hard to make the move happen, and we are thrilled to have him. To celebrate the new move, English program student worker Molly McGinley and the English faculty are organizing an open house event. Watch for an announcement from English Studies Coordinator, Dr. Margaret Perrow, for more information about this event. In the meantime, students are encouraged to swing by the new space and say hello to our amazing faculty!<\/p>\n<p>Another great reason to come see the new space is to schedule a check in with your English advisor and make sure you are on track with your degree plan and maybe add a certificate. The English program&#8217;s certificates &#8212; in Literary Studies, Foundations in Teaching English, Writing &amp; Rhetoric &#8212; can easily be added to your English degree. They are a great way to hone your skills and interests. They also look great on resumes! If you are not an English major or minor, but are interested in some English courses, you can get the certificate in English Studies.<\/p>\n<p>While helping unpack and set up Central Hall, Molly McGinley is also planning the well-loved 13-word scary-story contest. The entries for the contest are due by October 25th, and readings will take place later that week.
