About OLLI at SOU
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Southern Oregon University (OLLI at SOU) is a vibrant community that brings together more than 1,700 adults with courses, activities, events, and excursions each year during three academic terms (Fall, Winter, and Spring). Participants engage with others in a welcoming environment while broadening their knowledge of the world.
OLLI at SOU is a member‐driven educational community primarily serving adults aged 50 and above. We offer diverse courses and programs, each designed to foster lifelong learning, encourage social interaction, and provide cultural enrichment.
History at Southern Oregon University
In 1993, SOU officials met community members to determine interest in establishing a learning program for retirees. The initiative culminated in a volunteer-led Southern Oregon Learning in Retirement (SOLIR) program. Within ten years, more than 500 Rogue Valley adults were active in SOLIR. In 2007, businessman and philanthropist Bernard Osher awarded Southern Oregon University a million-dollar endowment to provide funding for the SOLIR program. In becoming part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) network, SOLIR changed its name to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Southern Oregon University — or OLLI at SOU. There are 125 OLLIs spanning all 50 states, offering learning opportunities for older adults.
2023 marked our 30th year as a lifelong learning program. Thanks to the Osher Foundation endowment, revenue from membership fees, personal donations, and dedication of our extraordinary volunteers have allowed OLLI at SOU to do the following while keeping membership fees affordable:
- Increase membership to earn a second million-dollar endowment
- Expand offerings to 100+ courses every term
- Add classroom locations and upgrade facilities
- Provide online access to courses
- Offer free public programs throughout the year
The National Resource Center for Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes is a valuable tool that helps OLLIs connect, collaborate, consult with leaders, and celebrate their members. To find an OLLI program near you, we encourage you to visit the Osher National Resource Center.
