The Certificate in Lighting Design and Technology offers focused training in design theory and practice for the entertainment industry.
The Certificate in Lighting Design and Technology is open to all degree-seeking students at SOU but is particularly suited for Theatre, Digital Cinema, or Emerging Media and Digital Arts majors eager to learn the skills required to be a lighting designer or technician in the entertainment industry.
The core curriculum includes classes in Stage Lighting, Lighting Design, and Concepts in Science; Light and Sound to build a strong foundation of practical skills. Choose from courses in Theatre, Art, Digital Cinema, and Emerging Media and Digital Arts to further tailor your training. Hang, focus and program lights for the stage using industry standard equipment or gain valuable studio experience working on Digital Cinema projects. You can even explore virtual lighting for digital effects or game environments. Next, apply your skills in live performance working in the Theatre Department, on set in the Digital Media Center, or both. To complete the curriculum you can choose from a range of Theater, Art, or Digital Cinema courses including classes in Physics, Directing, Scene Design, Character and Costume Design, Digital Design, Photography, Film Production, Animation, and others.
