Offered as an Academic Certification
The Certificate in Shakespeare Studies at SOU encompasses the study of Shakespeare’s language and analyses of his plays–as historical artifacts embedded in Elizabethan-Jacobean culture, as objects of ongoing critical-theoretical scrutiny, and as scripts for performance. The program emphasizes the multiple ways meaning can be made and found in Shakespeare’s texts, and assays their cultural impact during the past 400 years. The Certificate in Shakespeare Studies is supported by the special resources of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), the Margery Bailey Renaissance Collection, and the Center for Shakespeare Studies.
The Certificate in Shakespeare Studies is open to degree-seeking students at SOU. Any student interested in the works of William Shakespeare and their relevance to modern audiences is welcome.
Students will take three lower-division survey classes, which will ensure they are exposed to the plays widely regarded as Shakespeare’s greatest. They’ll then advance to elective topic courses of their choosing. Options include Shakespeare on Film, Shakespeare in Popular Culture, and the Summer Shakespeare intensive focused on plays in production at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, amongst others.
