Offered as an Academic Certification
This certificate is for students pursuing careers in technology and fabrication for live performance, cinema, and emerging media. You’ll transform conceptual visualization into realized art. Learn practical construction methods and techniques to create scenery, garments, properties, or scenic art as you build towards a career in technical direction, carpentry, costume technology or scenic, prop, or makeup arts. If you’re interested in applying 21st century skills like 3D printing, CAD drafting and modeling, CNC and laser cutting, to theatre, this certificate is for you. The Theatre Department’s Costume and Scenic shops boast industry-standard tools, giving you hands-on training and experience both in classwork and practical application for fully produced events. Advancing students may take on leadership roles like Cutter/Draper, Technical Director, Lead Carpenter, Lead Props Designer, Scenic Paint Charge, and many others.

The Certificate in Production Fabrication is open to all degree-seeking students at SOU but is particularly suited for Theatre, Emerging Media and Digital Arts, and Digital Cinema majors eager to learn the skills required to be an artisan in the entertainment industry.
Degree Roadmap
The Core Curriculum for a Costume Construction emphasis consists of four courses in Costume Fundamentals and Costume Construction. An emphasis in Stagecraft offers courses in Stagecraft and Stage Properties as well as Digital Design for the Arts (CAD). You’ll then choose from a huge range of additional classes that may include Drafting, Technical Direction, Properties, Painting, Sculpture, Scene Painting, Robotics, Digital Cinema Production, Character and Costume Design, Costume Crafts, Corsetry, Fashion History, Stage Makeup, Drafting, Welding, and more.
