Directing and Devising are two vital, though diverse, approaches to the leadership of a theatre project. The Certificate in Directing and Devising for Theatre provides students with a focused curriculum in these two contemporary methodologies. The role of the theatre director requires the ability to lead collaborators in the performance, design, and production areas towards a unified vision. Devising, or collaborative creation, is an ensemble-based method of creating a performance, requiring intensive teamwork and communication. Students will learn to work both collaboratively and as leaders in the theatre creation process.

The Certificate in Directing and Devising is open to degree-seeking students at SOU. Any student interested in collaboration toward the creation of works for stage or screen or taking a leadership role in such collaborations will succeed in this certificate.
Degree Roadmap
Every Directing and Devising student will take courses in Directing for the Stage, Directing for the Screen, Devising, Playwriting, and Acting. Beyond meeting the core curriculum, Direction and Devising students may choose from amongst a wide variety of electives from Theatre, Art, Digital Cinema, Creative Writing, and Music.
Concentrations
Students will concentrate their certificate studies in either Directing or Devising.
