General Education Completion Options
Students entering SOU with or without transfer credit from an accredited institution are expected to meet ONE of the following lower division general education requirement options below. In addition, all students must complete 12 upper-division credits in General Education courses (4 credits in the EDI capacity and 8 credits from a selection of courses drawn from CE, CI, IA, and NL capacities).
General Education Option 1
Completion of SOU’s General Education capacity requirements. See Catalog Here
General Education Option 2
Completion of any one of the following: Associate of Arts-Oregon Transfer degree (AAOT), Associate of Science-Oregon Transfer degree (ASOT), Core Transfer Map (CTM) as certified by an Oregon community college, Oregon Transfer Module (OTM) as certified by an Oregon community college, Direct Transfer Agreement degree (AA-DTA or AS-DTA) as certified by a Washington college, or Associate in Arts/Associate in Science degree for Transfer (AA/AS Transfer) as approved by a California community college.
General Education Option 3
Completion of Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC), the California State University (CSU) requirement, or an Articulated Program Agreement (APA) with Southern Oregon University. Students must provide documentation stating that the curriculum was completed.
General Education Option 4
Completion of ALL general education requirements at an accredited four-year institution of higher education. Students must provide documentation from the institution stating that general education requirements were met.
General Education Option 5
Completion of a transfer degree at a regionally accredited college or university that is recognized as meeting general education requirements for the public regionally accredited colleges/universities in the state it is issued. This must be noted on an official transcript.
In addition to these options, all students must complete 12 upper-division General Education course credits at SOU: 4 upper-division credits in Equity Diversity and Inclusion and 8 upper-division credits in CE, CI, IA, or NL with no more than 4 in any one of these capacities.

If no direct articulation, 3-4 credits from a lower division course that emphasizes creativity and innovation will be considered. Most Arts or Humanities courses will likely count, though any subject code could be applied.
Inquiry and Analysis (IA) | 3-4 Credits
1, 3-4 credit course
If no direct articulation, 3-4 credits from a lower division course that includes a research component will be considered. Most Social Science or Science courses will likely count, though any subject code could be applied.
Numerical Literacy (NL) | 3-4 Credits
1, 3-4 credit course
If no direct articulation, 3-4 credits from a lower division course that includes a computational component and emphasizes numerical literacy will be considered. Most Math courses will likely count, though any subject code could be applied.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) | 3-4 Credits
1, 3-4 credit course
If no direct articulation, 3-4 credits from a lower division Cultural Competency course will likely count.
Upper Division (300-400 level) Course Credits

Courses ending with “Z” are Oregon common course numbers. Classes taken outside of Oregon need to be direct articulations to the courses listed. COMM classes may only count as a transfer for WR 123 if students are transferring in with both WR 121z and WR 122z.
