Ecoadventure: Marine Science in Newport, Oregon
Our Fall Eco-Adventure course took us to the center of marine science on the West coast– Newport, OR. Our adventurous group of students stayed in the dormitories of the famous Hatfield Marine Lab for 3 days in October 2022.
No trip to Newport would be complete without a trip to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, where we were lucky enough to get a Behind the Scenes tour. Students learned about how the life-support systems are maintained in the tanks as well as the work involved with animal care and feeding. The picture below shows K.T presenting their lesson on kelp forest anatomy.
The rest of the weekend was packed with tours of Hatfield Marine Lab and the facilities of the federal government partners that are housed there: NOAA, US EPA, US and Oregon Fish and Wildlife Services, and the USDA. Students got excited about all of the funded summer research opportunities available for undergraduates at Hatfield.
Finally students got to tour two research vessels. One was the NOAA Research Vessel Oscar Dyson. Here we are in front of the ship! It took us over an hour to see the whole thing.
Playing on the beach was a big priority too!
