Welcome to the 2nd Annual Bringing Culture to the Table Event!
Written by Alex Auzas
This last fall term the Multicultural Coalition put on their second annual Bringing Culture to the Table event! The event is a part of the Taking Back Thanksgiving Movement that many people within the nation are starting to participate in. The movement itself is focused on anti-racist theories and decolonizing practices that help Americans learn about what really happened when settlers came to what is now known as the Americas.
The Bringing Culture to the Table event is about bringing people together through food. The Multicultural Coalition which is made up of all of the identity-based student unions on campus put on the event this year and last year in the Social Justice and Equity Center (SJEC). All of the groups brought at least one food item from their culture to share with everyone who came.
Foods of interest were fry bread from the Native American Student Union, rice and beans from the Latino Student Union, coco rice and coconut buns from the Samoan Club, soul food from the Black Student Union, and kalua pig and macaroni salad from the Hawaii Club. All of these foods were made by students for students and guests were able to mix and match what foods they grabbed.
As time goes on the Multicultural Coalition hopes to hold this event every year to help raise funds for the student groups and to help the Take Back Thanksgiving Movement. The event is open to the community, so you don’t have to be a student to join, and it will help facilitate much-needed community.
