The Economics program provides students with preparation in economic concepts and techniques within a liberal arts environment, offering a major, minor and, jointly with the Business program, a Certificate in Applied Finance and Economics (CAFE). The Economic program’s broad range of perspectives provides benefits to various programs as well as to its own students. The program is nationally recognized for the quality of faculty scholarship and for the heterodox character of its curriculum, which allows examination of issues from a variety of perspectives. Its strong interdisciplinary direction allows it to link well with other majors, such as Healthcare Administration, International Studies, Latin American Studies, Gender Sexuality and Women’s Studies, Environmental Studies, the Honors Program, and Business. Faculty are engaged in regional economics projects and students are involved in community-based learning endeavors through well-established placements. International exchange is supported for faculty and students alike.

I chose SOU Economics on the advice of my peers, foregoing other majors because of the versatility and employability of the major. With smaller class sizes, the professors are able to mentor at a more personal level, and I’ve been able to build lasting relationships with my peers.
I found small classes filled with like-minded and equally driven individuals as well as a dedicated base of talented professors who take the time to not only teach their students, but also to equip them with the tools needed for success.
