Ty DeFoe at SOU and OSF
Written by Alex Karreman
Native IndigeQueer Two-Spirit Artist Ty DeFoe was invited to SOU campus and to an OSF Gala. Ty is a hoop dancer, poet, actor, playwright, and much more. Check out more on Ty at their website https://www.tydefoe.com. On SOU’s campus, Ty held a zine-making class where many students and community members came and had discussions on what it means to be queer and native.
This zine is still in the process of being digitized and bound together and will be displayed during the Queer Indigenous Gathering happening in March. Ty also held a presentation on some of the work that he has done in the past in different communities. At the OSF Gala Ty was the guest of honor for the event.
They performed at the event to help fundraise for future shows at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. NASU was asked to come to gift Ty an 8th Generation blanket. Chava and Brent Florendo lead this gift-giving with an honoring song ending with supportive messages from people in Ty’s life.
Ty will be returning to SOU (though virtually) at the Queer Indigenous Gathering on March 14th. This series of events happened on October 30th, 2022, and November 1st, 2022.
