The Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University Theatre program offers educational and practical experience in all areas of theatre, including acting, directing, playwriting, costuming, stage scenery, lighting, sound, makeup, management, dramatic literature, and theatre history. Theatre majors participate in the department’s active and ambitious production program and experience the close working relationships that develop between faculty and students as they produce live theatre together.
Through the presentation of classic and contemporary dramatic works, the Theatre program contributes significantly to the social and cultural enrichment of SOU and Southern Oregon communities. Dedicated to creating practical opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and skills, the program not only provides performance opportunities for students but also mounts productions that are often designed and predominantly executed by students.
The Theatre program maintains a close working relationship with local professional theatres such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), Oregon Cabaret Theatre (OCT), and Ashland New Plays Festival (ANPF). Adjunct faculty, guest artists, and lecturers from these organizations enhance the program’s curriculum, and students of merit may have the opportunity to apply for internship positions during their junior or senior years.
SOU Theatre is actively confronting the call for true equity and inclusion in our field and our institution. To better support belonging for all, we are currently in-process with reviews and anti-racist initiatives to build a more equitable program.
