We are image makers, risk takers, builders, and critical thinkers. Now is the time to respond passionately and creatively to our constantly changing world.

The Art Program at SOU focuses on collaboration, research, and experimentation in order to prepare our students to thrive as creative professionals. With exceptional studio facilities and equipment, students have plenty of room to work on conceptual ideas using tangible mediums. The 66,000 square foot Center for the Visual Arts complex contains studios for Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, and Digital mediums as well as spaces for interdisciplinary projects, and individual student studios.
Partnering with the Schneider Museum of Art, visiting artists challenge our students to think critically about their work, and provide great networking opportunities and a look into the professional art community. Award-winning faculty provide instruction and mentorship in small classes.
The Art Program shares space with Emerging Media & Digital arts and with Creative Writing, together making up the Creative Arts department. Creative Arts, Music, and Theater make up the Oregon Center for the Arts. Collaboration opportunities with the other creative departments abound through the student-led annual Fringe festival, and the faculty-led New York City Spring Break trip.

Southern Oregon University taught me the skills to develop a strong studio art practice through a small staff, great facilities with a close knit arts community, as well as the confidence to develop criteria for how to produce my artwork with a critical awareness.
SOU provided me intimate interactions with very skilled and experienced faculty. It also provided me with numerous opportunities to understand the workings of the art world through working with the museum and being a gallery manager.
My time in the Oregon Center for the Arts perfectly bonded artistic practice with education; finding the balance between meaning and visual understanding were encouraged and prioritized. I truly felt at home at Southern Oregon University when I began my art career.
