The English Program at Southern Oregon University features an expansive curriculum designed to prepare students for further pursuits in academics or their careers.
Offered as a Bachelor of Arts Major
The English major offers a wide range of courses in literature, English education, linguistics, rhetoric, and writing. All of our courses focus on the delights and difficulties of reading, writing, and interpreting texts of various types.
Offered as a Secondary Discipline Minor
The English minor provides students with flexibility to design their own program. Students can opt for a general exploration of courses in a variety of topics: literature, pedagogy, linguistics, rhetoric and professional writing.
Offered as an Academic Certification
SOU’s TESOL certificate promotes global engagement, awareness, and cultural competency to help you explore the world, teach in global contexts, and work effectively with people from culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
The 14-credit Professional Writing badge builds the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to write and edit effective professional documents and materials. Students who complete the certificate will gain experience with a range of genres (e.g., grant proposals, manuals, end-user documentation, press releases, catalogs, published articles, and essays), as well as the ability to work collaboratively with organizations.
