About the Psychology Program

The faculty and staff in Psychology are here to help you learn as you pursue the study of psychology and achieve your personal and career goals. Our full-time faculty all hold doctoral degrees from major U.S. universities, and they represent a broad range of specializations. Among the major interest areas represented are: clinical & counseling psychology; human services; human development, psychopharmacology, gerontology, cognitive, health, social and comparative psychology..

These are among the many opportunities available to undergraduates in Psychology at SOU.

As a psychology major, you will explore your area of interest while learning the core scientific and theoretical principles of psychology.

Enjoy SOU’s small class sizes and take advantage of the research and scholarship opportunities offered by SOU’s many partnerships with local agencies and organizations. There are several program emphases offered for psychology majors, depending on particular career plans (e.g., paraprofessional programs and pre-graduate school programs, including experimental, clinical or counseling, child psychology, and organizational psychology).

Psychology courses and faculty are housed in the Education-Psychology Building which includes state-of-the-art equipment for classroom instruction, research, the students’ study of learning, biofeedback, and other subspecialty areas. For our Masters students, facilities also include a computerized lab, videotape equipment, and observation rooms.

Mission:
The goal and mission of the psychology program is to prepare students to enter a changing and demanding job market and to facilitate and encourage a lifetime of learning. More than at any other time in history we are faced with global changes that require us to assist students in gaining the information, technology, and new ways of thinking and viewing the world to achieve personal and professional success.

We believe that the best way to facilitate student growth and learning is to provide a solid scientific and theoretical base while teaching students to think critically, challenge accepted beliefs, and develop skills for their future. We believe it is our responsibility to provide the opportunities and tools necessary to integrate this knowledge and abilities into the students’ personal and professional identity, and to provide the student with a greater understanding of the diversity, interdependence, and interrelatedness of the world.
