Data Visualization

The micro-credential in Data Visualization is multi-disciplinary and prepares students to display meaningful patterns in data graphically, to represent data spatially, and to assemble complementary chart sets for decision making processes. Student will gain practical, hands-on experience with basic programing, chart design, static and dynamic visualization, map-making, and dashboard construction. Students will be able to produce professional quality data visualizations that are analytically sound, beautiful, and effective forms of communication.

Required Courses

• SOAN 329: Data Visualization – 4 Credits
• BUS 497: Business Analytics – 4 Credits *Prerequisite: MTH 243*

Select one of the following two courses:

• EMDA 331: The Art of Data – 4 Credits *Prerequisite: EMDA 203 or EMDA 204 or CS 200 or CS 210 or CS 256*
• ES 451: Geographic Information Systems – 5 Credits *Prerequisite: ES 349*

Additional Requirements

Students must earn a minimum grade of “C” in all courses that count toward this micro-credential. Prior to being awarded this credential, students will be required to submit a portfolio (set of artifacts) demonstrating their ability to access, summarize, and effectively visualize data at a professional level.

Learning Outcomes/Competencies

This micro-credential builds data visualization, analytical thinking and effective communication skills. Students will be able to:

• Access and build data sets using MS Excel, Tableau, and ArcGIS
• Use basic programing skills to create or modify data fields and/or customize software applications
• Employ best practices in chart and map design
• Construct effective charts, maps and dashboards in MS Excel, Tableau, and ArcGIS to highlight meaningful patterns in data
• Describe and interpret data patterns using clear and concise prose
