Application Information
Our Masters of Theatre Studies program will be accepting a new cohort of 20 students for 2025. Applications for 2025 will open on October 1, 2024 and close on January 3, 2025.
The program accepts up to 20 new students each year. Ideally, applicants are teaching Theatre at the middle school, high school, or community college level, and will have taught Theatre for at least two years (Applicants may apply during their second year of teaching.)
There are two applications and three steps required for our graduate program.
1. You must submit an application to the SOU. Consult the SOU Graduate Admissions webpage; complete and submit the SOU graduate application form along with the SOU application fee, and all official college and university transcripts.
2. You must submit a second application to the Master Of Theatre Studies program consisting of the following documents. There is no additional charge for the second application.
- A one to two-page statement of purpose that describes reasons for applying and how the program will support your educational philosophy, professional goals and the goals you have for your theatre program.
- Theatrical resume (including your theatre experience and background)
- Professional resume
3. The names and email addresses of three professional references who have agreed to write letters of recommendation on your behalf. We will contact your references directly and request their letter. Recommendation requests will come from mots@sou.edu; please advise your references to look for these messages.
Complete and submit your application.
Accepted applicants will receive the following:
- Welcome Letter
- Incoming Student Survey, which includes program commitment, elective class information, and on-campus housing and meal plan information
- Assignment Guide and Program Handbook
- Program invoice for $500 nonrefundable deposit (applicable to program tuition and fees)
- Instructions for submitting your forms, paying your deposit online, and registering for classes
The Incoming Student Survey and Deposit must be submitted by March 3, 2025.

*The tuition and fees listed above apply to one summer (12 credits) only. Financial Aid is applicable to the Program. Aid applicants should complete the 2024-2025 FAFSA for 2025. Please contact the SOU Financial Aid office at finaid@sou.edu for more Financial Aid information, and see below. Please observe the FAFSA filing deadlines to ensure you will be eligible for summer assistance. On-campus housing and meals are available for electives and the main sessions. Summer term fees are finalized in early April of each year. Please contact housing@sou.edu for further information on costs.
Important Financial Aid Information
In order to receive financial aid for summer 2025, you must fill out the FAFSA for the 2024-2025 year. You must file according to FAFSA guidelines. Summer is the final term of the 2024-2025 year. You must be admitted as an SOU graduate student. Since this is a master’s program, only federal loans (not direct grants) are available. Alternative loans (loans that the Oregon University system gives to students) may also be available. Information about financial aid and the FAFSA is located on the financial aid website.
