John Hackworth, Ed.D.
Assistant Professor

Dr. Hackworth has had an in-depth career focused on health and physical education. He spent 21 years teaching K-12, with most of his time spent instructing classes on the secondary level. Additionally, Dr. Hackworth coached various sports during his tenure as a physical educator.
He has presented at several conferences, presenting on tag rugby, curriculum in the physical education classroom, and using humor to engage students in the classroom. Additionally, he presented to school districts on the development of middle school physical education curricula.
Dr. Hackworth is a recipient of the Florida Society of Health and Physical Educators Teacher of the Year for Health award. In addition, he has had two articles published in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Dr. Hackworth’s research interests include curriculum and instruction in the physical education classroom and health & wellness preventive efforts, starting with education on the elementary and secondary levels.
Dr. Hackworth’s passion for education has been evident throughout his career. His purpose in life is to help equip future professionals in the field of health and exercise science with the tools needed to make a positive impact in their future careers. He strives to create a classroom for students that promotes creativity, critical thinking, respect for all, and a sense of community.
Dr. Hackworth is happily married and enjoys reading, playing golf, walking the family dog, exploring the west, and collecting sports memorabilia.

Michael Paddack DSc.

I began my career in 1990 at North Coast Sport and Physical Therapy in Eureka CA where I worked in the clinical, high school, fitness and outreach sports settings.
In 1997, I became an assistant Athletic Trainer at College of the Siskiyous. Five years later, I was promoted to become the Head Faculty Athletic Trainer. While at COS, I was responsible for athletic training duties as well as course and program development. I also served as an adjunct instructor in the athletic training, biology, and physical education departments.
In 2012, I took over the role of Head Athletic Trainer at Cal State Monterey Bay. In that position I oversaw all things sport performance related including Strength and Conditioning, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy and all medical contact between the athletes and the medical community where I remained until arriving at SOU.

Jamie Vener, Ph.D

Dr. Vener teaches classes in health and exercise science. She is passionate about physical activity, exercise and outdoor recreation, and conveys this in her teaching. Areas of research include women and physical activity adherence, exercise at altitude, fluid balance, and acceleration in humans.

Matt Vogel, M.A.

Matt has worked in higher education for close to 20 years in both faculty and staff roles. In addition to teaching at SOU, he was the campus Health Promotion Specialist from 2011-2018 and facilitated a number of campus programs related to student wellness.
He has presented at several conferences, high schools, and colleges on issues such as substance use and college life, leadership, technology and teens, stress, sleep, and prescription drugs.
Not only is Matt passionate about Health Promotion, he is a strong advocate for critical thinking, respect, and dynamic engagement in the classroom. He is a strong proponent of a heterodox approach where a variety of perspectives are welcome, and mutual understanding can be achieved through viewpoint diversity and dialogue. He is an advocate for pragmatic educational experiences that will help students develop workforce readiness skills.

Ryan Weatherwax, Ph.D, CSCS, ACSM-EP

Dr. Weatherwax’s passion as a professional is being in the classroom (in-person and online) with students to help them learn, appreciate, and become ambassadors of the fields of health, exercise science, and kinesiology. He strongly believes the educational experience must move beyond memorization and focus on the ability to apply information to new situations, draw parallels between concepts/ideas, and produce high-quality original work. Seeing students take ownership of their education, push themselves to have a deeper understanding of the content, critically analyze and apply information, and develop a passion and excitement for the field is truly an invaluable experience.
His research investigates how to individualize exercise prescriptions to enhance training outcomes and the identification of when and why true training adaptations and responses occur. Dr. Weatherwax’s other professional interests relate to improving exercise performance and health outcomes through evidence-based practice, evaluating the mechanics of movements, environmental considerations to exercise, exercise interventions in clinical settings, and pedagogical practices in higher education to enhance the student learning experience.
