Safety & Security within Housing
We understand that safety and security is very important to students and their families; we share this value and believe that safety and security is a shared responsibility.
A Shared Responsibility
It is the expectation that residents agree to take responsibility for their own safety and security, and to support the safety and security of others. When signing the University Housing contract, students agree to read and abide by security policies and precautions stated in the SOU Student Code of Conduct and other university publications made available to them.
Any student who is concerned about a risk or threat of safety for themselves or others, or who has concerns about property damage, security risk, or significant disruption, should contact a housing staff member in their area. If the matter is urgent, call the Campus Public Safety Office at 541.522.6911 . The sooner we know about something, the sooner we can intervene.
Buildings & Security
Fobs & Hard Keys: When students move-in to the residence halls, they will be given a fob, and if they live in McLoughlin or Madrone halls, will also receive a hard key for their bedroom. There are three to four locked security points for a resident to get into their bedroom.
- Exterior doors. All outside doors of each residence hall are locked 24 hours a day. Students may enter by swiping their fob at the fob reader at each entrance.
- Entry points to residential wings. There is a second locked point at the entrances to residential wings. Students who live in the building can enter these areas by swiping their fobs on the fob reader.
- Suite doors. We recommend that students lock their room doors when they are not in their rooms, if the door is not already automatically locked.
- Room doors. Students in McLoughlin & Madrone halls are issued a room key when they check-in to housing. We encourage students to lock their room door when they are not home.
On-Call Staff
University Housing has staff on-call from 8pm to 8am every day. Additionally, there are live-in professional staff members for the residence halls.
University Housing has a positive relationship with Campus Public Safety and the Ashland Police Department. If you are in need of their assistance, you can call 911 for emergencies or 541.552.6911 for Officer Assistance.
Safety Tips
- Keep your room door locked when you are not present.
- Do not prop outside doors open. Do not let strangers into your building.
- Do not leave your belongings unattended in public or common areas.
- Be aware of what is going on around you.
