Students interested in a richer mathematical experience, than that afforded by the mathematics major, can apply for the honors program in mathematics. Graduation with honors in mathematics requires completing all requirements for the mathematics major, in addition to completing requirements for the department’s honors program.
SOU and the Mathematics Department want you to have a fulfilling and successful learning experience, while we help you develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes of a truly educated liberal arts student. The SOU honors program provides an excellent background with which to enter a Master’s or PhD program in mathematics. The honors program offers qualified students the opportunity to work independently with a mathematics faculty mentor in a mutually chosen area of mathematics.
Interested students are encouraged to apply in the spring of their junior year. Once qualified students are accepted by the SOU Mathematics Department, honors students work with a faculty mentor throughout their senior year, independently studying an advanced mathematical topic and preparing an expository thesis. “Graduation with Honors in Mathematics” will appear on the student’s diploma and official transcript. Completion of the Honors Degree in mathematics will be acknowledged in the graduation program. The SOU Mathematics Department will include the student’s Honor’s Thesis in the Departmental Honors Library and the student’s name will be engraved on the Departmental Honor Roll.
