Tuition and Fees

For in-state students and students eligible for the Western Regional Graduate Program, the approximate cost of a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is $52,000, not including textbooks, course fees and licensing test fees. For out of state students, the cost is approximately $59,000, not including textbooks, course fees and licensing test fees. Western Regional Graduate Program & Scholarships

The CMHC program is proud to be designated as a Western Regional Graduate Program, helping our students afford the high cost of out-of-state tuition. Out-of-state students from the other 14 western states* pay in-state graduate tuition. The CMHC program awards this financial aid to increase diversity and recognize academic excellence. To be considered for the WRGP resident tuition rate, submit a 300 word essay that addresses how you meet one or both of the selection criteria (diversity and/or academic excellence). You can apply to CMHC program directly by sending your essay (as an email attachment) to CMHC@sou.edu.

Oregon Lottery Scholarship

Funds from the Oregon Lottery are available to our program to distribute as scholarships to incoming students.

The criteria includes: ethnic and cultural diversity, financial need, and academic accomplishments. The selection committee will review the CMHC application, financial need as determined by the SOU financial aid office, and student identified ethnicity. Students interested in this award need to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), available at the Financial Aid Office. Incoming students will be sent an invitation to apply.

The SOU Financial Aid Office is available to help students with other funding questions.

Professional Organizations

CMHC students are encouraged to join professional counseling organizations and to participate in professional conferences and training opportunities. Developing one’s professional identity and competence is a process that spans one’s career that provides ongoing education and a supportive community of peers. Below we provide links to some of the most relevant national and regional counseling organizations to explore and join.

The American Counseling Association (ACA) is the largest professional counseling association in the country. ACA has 19 divisions as well as regional, international, and special interest groups that members may join.

The American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) is an organization specifically focused on the professional needs of mental health counselors. They provide numerous clinically-oriented presentations and training opportunities, a journal, advocacy on behalf of licensed counselors, and a marketing resource for those in private practice. The National Board of Certified Counselors is an independent organization that certifies counselors. While not the same as state licensure, this level of recognition is useful in enhancing one’s professional identity, level of competence, and mobility for employment. The Oregon Counseling Association (ORCA) sponsors an annual conference and workshops throughout Oregon; ORCA is affiliated with ACA. These organizations work with State of Oregon legislators on behalf of licensed counselors and with the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists (OBLPCT).

The Mental Health Resource and Education Network (MHREN) is a local group of mental health professionals. They provide numerous workshops during the year at reasonable cost in Medford, Oregon. They also have an on-line therapist Referral Directory for those looking for a counselor.
