Program Preparation
Students who display a talent in voice or instrument and have the drive and desire to develop their technical abilities are perfect candidates for the SOU Music Program.
Degree Roadmap
Music majors receive a BM in music by successfully completing 75 credits required for the music Core Curriculum. The Core Curriculum provides students with a solid background in music theory, aural skills, music history, and solo and ensemble performance skills, while allowing ample credits for exploration of other academic disciplines or more specialized areas within the Department of Music. Performance majors must participate in extra small and large ensemble work, advanced theory and history classes, conducting work, as well as full recitals in the junior and senior years. Education majors learn basic proficiency in all major wind, brass, and string instruments, along with vocal pedagogy and rigorous courses in music education.
Capstone
The Capstone project is designed collaboratively by the student and the student’s advisor and should integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, and outcomes of the collective body of study the student has undertaken in his/her university experience. The project will be documented in a career-oriented final portfolio and submitted to the student’s advisor, and archived by the Music Office.
