SOU is delighted to announce a new, more performance-oriented Music minor. This is a great option for students who do not want to major in music, but want to continue to cultivate their musical skills and increase their musical enjoyment. You don’t have to be a professional to enjoy music for the rest of your life! Music minors take courses in basic music theory, history, and ear-training, along with private lessons and access to all of the University’s performing ensembles. To top it off, students get to take their pick from a number of enjoyable and enriching music electives spanning Rock, Jazz, and World Music.

If you love music and want to cultivate your skills as a performer, but don’t necessarily want to make it the focus of your professional life, then SOU’s performance-oriented Music Minor is for you!

Degree Roadmap

Music Minors will complete 33 credits in the music program. This includes three full terms of music theory, ear-training courses, private performance lessons, and ensembles, as well as electives in music history.

Degree Integration

Some music minor students will prepare for their intended career through a major degree while pursuing personal musical interests with their minor. Other students may pursue a music minor to provide specific specialization to complement their major. A music minor degree may provide the foundation for a very successful career.
