SOU Housing Student Staff Employment
General Student Staff Expectations
Student Staff Members for University Housing should:
- Have and maintain a 2.5 GPA for each term and a 2.5 culmlative GPA while employed
- Be in good judicial standing with the University and University Housing
- Have a positive attitude about the work that they do
- Conduct themselves in a professional manner
- Alternate employment may be limited depending on position
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
- All positions are contingent upon completion of a successful background check
Qualifications
This position is designated as a critical, security-sensitive or safety-sensitive position and therefore, requires the successful completion of a Criminal Background Check and adherence to confidentiality agreements.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner both verbally and in writing.
The University Housing department expects its staff members to find a successful balance between academics and the student staff position and is concerned about the academic success of its staff members. Therefore, student staff must be enrolled as a full-time student and remain in good academic standing by maintaining a term and cumulative grade point average of 2.50 while fulfilling the requirements and obligations of an SOU student.
Student Staff Members may not hold any position on Area Council or any compensated position within the Residence Hall Association.
Special Characteristics
Job requires 18-20 hours per week (NOTE: Students with multiple jobs can only work a combined maximum of 20 hours each week).
Work may be required on weekends, hours of work may vary.
Work environment involves frequent interruptions and the delivery of documentation across campus.
Conditions
A student staff member will not be placed on academic, judicial, or performance probation more than once during the entire term of employment with University Housing. If it becomes necessary to put the staff member on probation a second time during employment, the staff member may be terminated.
Student staff members are expected to be in compliance with the SOU Student Code of Conduct, University Housing Contract, city ordinances, and state and federal laws.
The University Housing Department expects student staff to serve as positive role models to residents and within the community. Therefore, a student staff member must remain in good standing (academic, judicial, and performance) with Southern Oregon University and University Housing at all times during their employment. Staff members that fail to remain in good standing could receive sanctions including but not limited to probation, termination, and/or deduction in their compensation.
In order to develop as a paraprofessional and maintain positive working teams, staff are required to attend training sessions, assist with staff selection processes, be responsible for the information provided in the Student Staff Training Manual, attend weekly staff meetings, one-on-one meetings with supervisor, and in-service training sessions. Exceptions to miss any part of training must have a direct academic connection and will be considered for approval by your supervisor.
In order to foster and maintain positive levels of trust, student staff must be professional and discreet with sensitive and confidential information. Use of electronic devices and files provided by University Housing (phone, tablet, etc.) are reserved for the purposes of University Housing employment responsibilities only.
The student staff member understands that this employment agreement is a general statement of duties and does not specifically cover every duty of their position. The student staff member understands the supervisor of their area will provide them with more specific expectations during each term with what will be expected to comply. The staff member further understands that there may be other duties assigned by the University Housing department.

Resident Assistant
Resident Assistants (RAs) have the most direct and regular contact with our residence hall students. Their primary responsibility is to act as a facilitator for the residence hall community and to enhance the social, educational, and cultural development of each of their residents, which typically includes planning and hosting events within the residence halls. The RA works to help students through challenges and helps celebrate their successes. They serve on a nightly duty rotation to assist students with a variety of concerns and to keep the residence halls safe and secure.
Position Responsibilities:
- Community Facilitator
- Be available and accessible to floor residents. RAs should plan weekly contact hours with residents.
- Know all of their residents by name within the first three weeks of each term. Hold at least one floor meeting per term.
- Assist students with personal, social, and academic problems.
- Assist in the development of an educationally supportive and inclusive living environment by providing effective, educational activities, and consistent monitoring of the floor environment.
- Respect and maintain appropriate staff and student confidentiality.
- Encourage personal responsibility on the part of every floor member.
- Welcome each resident at the beginning of each term and any new residents, by providing floor and door decorations.
- Participate and involve residents in University events as directed by University Housing. These include but are not limited to Orientation and Week(end) of Welcome activities.
- Actively support and encourage participation in Area Council meetings and events.
Referral Agent
- Report all emergencies and serious situations to their supervisor and/or the professional staff member on call, as dictated by protocol.
- Be familiar with all campus and community resources to assist residents with problems.
- Act as a referral agent for students to different campus and community resources.
Team Member
- Attend and participate in all staff training and in-service sessions.
- Attend all weekly staff meetings and contribute to the efficient functioning of the community.
- Help develop a staff community, which includes custodial/maintenance workers, student workers, and all other staff who work in the department. Display a positive attitude and be supportive to all staff members.
- Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of newly hired staff members.
Administrator
- Be available for and participate in the opening and closing of residence halls.
- Assist with year-end closing activities. RAs will be required to remain in their building until the building has been officially closed per University Housing staff guidelines.
- Be available for special staffing assignments, including but not limited to Opening Weekend, Preview Weekends, Homecoming, Halloween, and Finals Weekends.
- Participate in weekly and weekend building duty rotation. Duty coverage will be determined prior to the start of each term under the direction of your supervisor. Switching duty (a whole night) will be
permitted only with the permission of your supervisor. Duty covers (a short period of time) are not permitted under any circumstances unless prior approval has been made with your supervisor.
RAs are expected to help with All-On Days. Opening Weekend, Halloween, Preview Weekends, Winter Closing and Opening, Spring Closing, and any other All-On Days as assigned by your supervisor are days that all RAs are expected to be present and assisting the Department. - During All-On Days, all RA staff members are expected to stay within the Ashland city limits or within a 30-minute response radius and participate in enhanced duty rotations, as specifically outlined by your supervisor. During these All-On Days, RAs that are off-campus (while within the response radius) are expected to be available and responsive to communication from their supervisor and/or professional staff on call.
- November break (Thanksgiving) and Spring break are weeks when the residence halls remain open. RAs are expected to work either during November break or during Spring break. The duty schedule for these breaks will be facilitated by your supervisor.
- Maintain professional and timely communication with the direct supervisor throughout the entirety of the contract. This includes but is not limited to weekly 1:1 meetings, prompt email and phone communication, etc.
- RAs are expected to regularly check all forms of communication as designated by their supervisor, unless they are on approved time away.
- Complete the following administrative tasks in a timely fashion: check in, check out, room inventory forms, maintenance requests, surveys, CARES reports, incident reports, and other tasks assigned by your supervisor.
- Post notices, flyers, newsletters, and correspondences in a timely manner.
- Be responsible for the information presented in meetings, training sessions, and communicated by your supervisor.

- Actively confront and document all disciplinary situations.

- Provide quality educational and inclusive events as defined in training sessions and as designated by your supervisor.

Resident Manager
Resident Managers (RMs) work primarily with the tenants and their families in Student Apartments & Family Housing. RMs serve as quality customer service providers, general resources, and community facilitators through various events and initiatives. RMs support the academic mission of the University by providing a safe, healthy, and educationally purposeful living environment for all residents of Student Apartments & Family Housing. RMs serve on a nightly duty rotation to assist tenants with a variety of concerns and to keep the community safe and secure.

Housing Office Assistant
The Housing Office Assistants (OAs) work to help tenants with payments, process room changes, sort and distribute mail and packages, and answer general questions about Housing. They are expected to provide quality and professional customer service to SOU students, families, faculty, staff, and guests. The Housing Office Assistant position is an hourly position. Students hired must be able to work at least 10 hours per week, with a maximum of 20 hours per week.
